Which parameters are removed?

Campaign tags that start with utm_, ad click IDs such as gclid, fbclid, msclkid, and ttclid, email tracking IDs from services such as Mailchimp, HubSpot, and Marketo, and share IDs that one site adds, such as si on YouTube and igsh on Instagram. The list is based on the ones Firefox uses for Copy Clean Link and Brave uses to strip tracking parameters.

Why was ref or source kept?

Only parameters known to track are removed. Names such as ref, source, and id do real work on many sites, so they are removed only where a site is known to use them for tracking, such as ref on Amazon.

Will the cleaned link still work?

The removed parameters are not needed to open the page. On a store page, the size or color chosen in the original link may reset to the default.

Can it expand bit.ly or t.co links?

How to use this tool

Paste one link, a list of links, or a message, Markdown, or HTML that contains links. Sample loads four common cases.
Check the Links list. Each link shows its site, the rest of the address, and every removed tracker or redirect crossed out in red.
Copy the cleaned text. Open a cleaned link once before you share it widely, in case the page needed something that was removed.

Supported formats and limitations

Only links that start with http:// or https:// are changed. A link ends at a space, a quote, < or >, and a period or comma right after it is not part of the link.
Parameters are matched by name against a fixed list, ignoring letter case. Other parameters are kept, with their order and encoding unchanged.
Only the query string is cleaned, plus Amazon's /ref= path segment. Text after # is kept, even when it holds parameters.
Redirect links from Google, Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Outlook Safe Links, Slack, Reddit, Steam, VK, and DuckDuckGo are replaced by the address they lead to.
Short links such as bit.ly, t.co, and amzn.to are not expanded, because that means opening them.
Affiliate tags, such as tag= on Amazon, are kept. They credit the person who shared the link.
Proofpoint URL Defense links are left unchanged. Their signature covers the whole address.

Common errors and solutions

No links found: A link has to start with http:// or https://. Add the scheme to an address such as example.com/page.
Kept utm_source: the value has a comma, bracket, or other character: The value contains a character that can also end a link, as in a CSV row. Put a space or a quote after the link so its end is clear, or delete the parameter by hand.
is a link shortener: A short link hides its destination until it is opened. Use the URL unshortener, which sends the short link to this site's server, or open it in a private window and paste the full address here.
