JSONPath tester

Paste JSON and a path. No match is an empty list, not an error.

Filter scripts such as [?(@.ok)] are rejected. The path is not evaluated as code.

Ctrl+Enter or ⌘+Enter runs this tool immediately.

JSON document
Matches

Waiting for input.

Parsing stays in this browser. Input is not uploaded or saved.

How to use this tool

  1. Paste a JSON document, or load the sample.
  2. Type a JSONPath such as $.owners[0].name. The matches appear after you pause typing.
  3. A path that selects nothing returns [] and the status says there was no match.

Supported formats and limitations

  • The path uses JSONPath field, index, slice, and wildcard selectors.
  • Script expressions, including [?(@.field)] and [(expr)], are rejected and produce no output.
  • Invalid JSON produces no matches.
  • No match is a successful empty list. It is not reported as a parse error.
  • The document is not rewritten.

Examples

The first owner name

$.owners[0].name selects one string.

$.owners[0].name

A missing field

$.missing matches nothing. The result is an empty list.

$.missing

Common errors and solutions

Eval prevented
Remove the script filter. Use a name or an index instead.
Invalid JSON
Fix the document before testing the path. A bad document does not produce matches.
Invalid JSONPath
Check brackets and dots. The status quotes the parser message.

FAQ

Why was my filter rejected?
Filters that run an expression are disabled so a path cannot execute code. Use a direct selector.
What does an empty list mean?
The document parsed and the path matched nothing. That is a successful result.
Is the document uploaded?
No. The path runs in your browser.

Validate JSON, then pretty-print it with 2 or 4 spaces or minify it. Invalid JSON produces an error and leaves the output empty.
